Takeaways from CSU football spring scrimmage, including QB competition

Jim Mora says strides are being taken.

The Colorado State football team isn’t game ready, the new coach of the Rams says, but that’s the expectation of spring ball.

They’re getting closer.

“Highly competitive practice,” Mora said April 4 after CSU’s second scrimmage of spring ball. “I thought we were more competitive than we were last week and that’s what we have to be.”

It’s still the early days of piecing together what this team will look like for the 2026 season, but there are some noticeable pieces showing what a Mora-led CSU will look like.

Here are some takeaways.

Top players face each other in practice

No. 1 offense vs. No. 1 defense. There’s no mixing and matching of No. 1s of one group against the backups on the other side of the ball, as some programs do.

“We do all good on good,” Mora said.

It’s part of his philosophy on making practices very difficult.

“If everything is perfect all the time you’re probably not pushing hard enough, you’re probably not challenging them hard enough,” Mora said.

A real quarterback competition is well underway

It’s been quite a while since there’s been a real quarterback competition at CSU. The Jay Norvell era began with Clay Millen the clear starter and that was the case until a sudden shift to Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi. He was the undisputed No. 1 until being pulled midseason last year.

Now? A very real competition is underway for the No. 1 spot between Oklahoma State transfer Hauss Hejny and UConn transfer K’saan Farrar.

Both had some highlight moments in this scrimmage. Each had a long touchdown run racing away from the defense. Farrar had a long-strike TD pass to Jordan Mosley. Hejny had a long TD pass to RJ Vick.

Both also had some missed plays, too.

“I’ve seen more consistency. Not enough consistency but more consistency,” Mora said. “They are becoming more consistent but I’m always going to tell you it’s not good enough yet.”

Don’t hold your breath waiting for a starter to be named, either.

“We’re a long ways from making that decision,” Mora said, noting they could wait until Week 1 to choose if they want.

Quick hitters

Here are a few more quick notes:

  • Lavon Brown made an impact. The redshirt junior made several good plays and his consistency as an open and available playmaker seems to be growing.

  • Oumar Diomande looks like a big defensive weapon. The UConn transfer linebacker is frequently around the ball and very noticeable on defense.

  • CSU has quite a talented running back group. It’s hard to say who might be the No. 1 now. Mel Brown and Oliver Lundberg are both frequent playmakers in spring but there’s a lot of depth and competition through the group.
